Feb 19th ~ 23rd
Monday – We had a presentation of research and a group crit and since I’m only typing this up on the Sunday after I can‘t recall much detail, between being totally pissed off with this job and pretty well knackered. I wasn’t really properly prepared and didn’t really have a lot to share with the class. All I could really do was give an outline of the meagre research I’ve done so far and show an old video.
Tuesday – Presentation of Research: Text from ‘The Object’ edited by Antony Hudek. I chose a review of Gabriel Orozco’s Astroturf Constellation by Nancy Spector, a curator at the New York Guggenheim. This piece has a special resonance for me because it marked a breakthrough in a creative block during my second semester in 4th year. By examining his approach to photography and the object I gave myself permission to leave the studio. I was irresistibly drawn to a particular environment but I had been avoiding it for ridiculous reasons. I spent several weeks collecting and working on a secluded stretch of beach, and connected with the rich tradition of the artist as collector.
Reading the White Cube Situations @ The Glucksman. The text was a revelation, definitely one of those things I should have known about but it passed me by, after our discussion we were introduced to Chris Clarke, Senior Curator at the Glucksman who will be conducting our Institutions & Practices module starting in the summer semester..
The 3.30 pm talk in the downstairs lecture theatre at CCAD, (I was very confused by people referring to the DLT). Lucy gave us a short lecture on primitive cave art and introduced us to Dr.Simon Knowles who described a trip to visit the Florentine frescoes at the Brancacci Chapel by Masaccio. Miranda Driscoll, the artistic director at the Sirius Arts Centre in Cobh, presented the project to restore the ONE HERE NOW Brian O’Doherty / Patrick Ireland mural and outlined the upcoming interaction with the CADD students
I had to send an email to Ailbhe outlining my schedule for the few weeks, we’re making a big push to finish the sculpture before Paddy’s day so I’ll have to miss a few extra days of course work.
